The Court House and Clerk's Office, along with homes and buildings in the vicinity, were burned by Union troops on March 10, 1864, during the Civil War. In 1828, the Clerk's Office burned and most records were lost. Unfortunately for researchers, the King and Queen County Court House, along with its records, has burned twice. Mantapike Hill was also the site of a Civil War battle on March 2, 1864. Major General George Mercer Brooke, of War of 1812 fame, was born at Mantapike, Virginia on October 6, 1785. The property was inherited by Tunstall Banks and purchased by George Brooke in 1769. This same land was later patented to William Banks (part of his 1079 acres) on 21 April 1690. Mantapike (or Mantpoyick) first appears in a land patent, on 18 April 1653, of 700 acres to Edward Diggs (Patent Book 3, page 32). Mantapike Landing is the site of the known residence of William Banks in Virginia. There are many property records for land grants to William Banks in New Kent (later King and Queen) County, Virginia. It is believed they immigrated from England, and some researchers think they are descended from William and Mary (Tunstall) Banks, who immigrated from Dorset, England around 1668. ImmigrationOur Banks ancestors can be traced back reliably to James and Mary Banks of Bedford and Prince George Counties in Virginia. The final -s may occasionally represent a plural form, but it is most commonly an arbitrary addition.
